Success stories; May, 2010

Taz & Jessie
Just thought Ii'd let you know that all is going extremely well with
Taz, Jessie and I! Back in September 2009 I adopted Taz and he settled
into his new home on Phillip Island very quickly.
In April 2010 Ithought Taz might enjoy a playmate to keep him entertained while I'm
at work. That's when we met Jessie! Jessie (Kelpie x) is 11months old
and Taz (Staffy x) is 18months, so both have loads of energy.
As you
can see, we love our daily session down at the beach playing catch and
socializing with other beach goers. When back at the house Taz and
Jessie continue playing with any one of their many toys (yep, they're
spoiled rotten!) while I take a rest. A big thanks to all the team at
AAPS! With your hard work you have managed to make another two dogs
and one dad very happy! Keep up the great work!
Marcus, Taz and Jessie :)

Echo & Banjo
We adopted Echo (16977) and Banjo (16978) on 2 December 2007, I decided to keep their names as they seemed to respond quite well to it depending on if they want to hear there names said...
Banjo is very affectionate & loves anything for a cuddle coz he purrs like crazy when he sits on my lap.. and he loves curling up with me in bed and his purring is hypnotic and makes me fall alseep.. when he wants food his meow sounds very high pitch like a female cat..
Echo is affectionate but not as much as banjo is ... she likes being picked up high so she can see everything then she starts purring but Echo's purring isnt very loud.. when she wants her food her meow sounds very deep meow like a male cat..
I think somthing it so wrong with that but it hilariously funny to hear them meow like that. They love sleeping together and playing together especially at nite time when me and my partner decide to go to bed all we can hear them is running round like nut cases.. Since we have brought them Banjo has put on weight and Echo has put on weight as well..

Ada
Hello...my name is Ada. I used to be known as Sasha. Last October my new mum and dad, found me in your shelter. I was very nervous and unsure of my ways. I go for lots of walks to the beach , where I am allowed to run free, ( it's so much fun ). I live at Port Welsh Pool, where it is very peaceful and I think you could say that I am a success story. )
Big Boy and Little Man
Just a quick email to let you know that the boys settled in to their new
home instantly, and we adore them. We have tried our hardest to come up with amazing names, but the
nicknames we gave them on the first day home have stuck and suit them to a T...Big Boy and Little Man.
They are the sweetest little things, very cheeky and playful. They love
playing with assorted mousies and watching them skid down the
floorboards is hilarious. They love to sit on their day bed and watch the birds outside (and
Chester the next door neighbour cat) and Big Boy runs to the dining room
and rolls over for a belly rub every time Dave comes home. I'll send an update in a few months for the newsletter, with new photos
then too. Regards, Stee.

Marley & Alfie
We adopted Thumper & Fergus, now Marley & Alfie in April 2010. We weren't sure if we were going to adopt one or two kittens, but as soon as we entered their pen, they jumped all over us and we decided there was no way we could choose between them. When we got home and opened their boxes, thinking they might be a bit scared in a new place, but they jumped out purring and started checking out their new home straight away! They are the best of friends, sleeping and eating together, and they love play fighting with each other and chasing each other around the house. They entertain us for hours with their antics and we love them to bits. So we wanted to say a big thank you for looking after them so well while they were with you and wanted to let you know they are doing really well and are very much loved members of our family!
Regards,Lauren & Will

Robbie
We got our pug x schnauzer, Robbie, from the shelter in January. He was in an extremely neglected state, had no hair on his back, was recovering from a case of maggots and kennel cough and was severely overweight. We are finally fulfilling our promise to send through some photos of him now that he is happy and healthy. I have attached some photos of him doing the Million Paws Walk on the weekend. Robbie was clearly very loved at the Keysbourough and we are so glad we were lucky enough to get him. Cheers,Louise

We came to the shelter in March and found a beautiful 5 year old German Shepherd called Jessie.
She has settled in really well, she now has 2 big sisters ….. 2 mares who look after her..She has given up on rabbits there too fast!!!!!
We lost our 2 precious dogs (Toby aged 20 & Rose aged 11) in November last year all within 2 weeks of each other and Jessie ( who is now named Rose number 2) has filled our broken hearts with so much love & joy.
I hope you enjoy the pictures…Regards, Jane & James

Zeus
A month ago, we visited the Keysborough shelter, with the aim of bringing home a new cat.
The staff at the shelter were fantastic, after explaining we already had a six year old female cat, who was very docile, we were looking for a "couch potato", with a similiar nature.
We met Mary, one of the carers, who showed us several cats that would suit, but pointed us in the direction of "ZEUS", a gentle cat, in the corner, with a quiet nature, by no means a show off, and when Mary explained he had been there since October, I told her he was coming home with us.
Mary was stoked, let us loan a large cat carrier to bring him home in.
Shares the bed with the resident cat "Tigger", cause the mink blanket is on the bed, and last night was lying on his back, all four paws splayed out...very relaxed.
He doesn't snore, which is a blessing.
What a beautful boy, and already settled right in.
I want to thank Mary especially, who had obviously come close to "ZEUS" in the time he was at the shelter, for steering us in the right direction, and introducing us to him.
After only a week, there was no way he was going back, he was part of the family.
Thank you again to Mary, and the staff at the shelter, that could not do enough for us that day, and I cannot thank you enough for "ZEUS"

Richo & Princess
We wanted to write to you for a while now and finally made it. We have adopted Richo & Princess from your Shelter just before Christmas 2009 and they have, finally, settle in well. Both were quiet overweight, so we had to put both on a diet - easier said than done with cats!!! A first for us, so we as well as the cats needed time to adjust to the new food routine. But they both finally look splendid and slim, only sign left is that saggy belly from their 'big' days.
These days, Richo is the lazy one, sleeping most of the day on our bed or in his bean bag, whereas Princess is up and around with us, making sure we don't forget she is there. They both have improved so much in a positive way, the first 6 to 8 months were so testing that we have to admit we nearly toke them back to you, but our believe that there is more to those two than what we saw, we gave them more time. And the result is wonderful - we have two great cats, who are entertaining and wonderful in their own ways and we wouldn't want to live without them, they are part of our family now.
So, here they are, both slimmed down and happy on their new scratching post we bought them for Christmas. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!!! Birgit & Michael

Bizzi and Lucky
I wanted to let you know that Bizzi and Lucky have settled into our home so well. They made themselves very comfortable very quickly and we would be lost without them. Lucky has really settled down and is showing his funny personality now, whereas Bizzi was the boss before. We are trying to get Bizzi to lose a little weight so she can jump up onto the couch on her own ! It is funny to watch them tussling with each other. I enclose below a photo of them on the lounge floor playing with their toys.
Earlier in the year I gave my gorgeous little Prince (an Affenpinscher) up for adoption at the Shelter because he did not settle at all well at our new house, and he retreated very much into himself once we moved. It upset me greatly, and as I love Prince so much, I decided it would be better for him to live where he would be happier. We had originally adopted Prince off his breeder and he had a few 'issues' from the start. These exacerbated when we moved. I cried and cried when I dropped him off as I still love him so much and think about him every day. I check your website a couple of times a week to see if there is a New Home Story there about him. I am not sure that the 'Story' that I left with you about Prince was read by all of the staff because when Pete and I came to adopt Bizzi and Lucky I felt I was treated with suspicion by one of the ladies at the Shelter because I had previously surrendered a dog to you. This has been on my mind since it happened and I have to let you know, so I can move on. I will enclose below another copy of Prince's story and I hope that the lady will read it.
The work that you do at the Shelter is terrific and I have told many people that they should consider adopting a dog from you. I felt I had to send this email so that if anyone else was in my position, having surrendered a dog, they would not feel like I did. It is hard enough saying good-bye to any pet, at any time.
As per usual, I left both Bizzi and Lucky under the bed covers (as happens every day) when we left for work this morning ! I know you are not allowed to let me know how Prince is going - I will keep checking your Website and hopefully I will see his little monkey face there one day. Keep up the great work. Kind regards,
Angela
Copy of Prince's story
My name is Angela and I am Prince’s Mum. Prince is an Affenpinscher (affectionately known as monkey-face dogs). I love my little man dearly and that is why I am putting him up for adoption.
This is Prince’s story. He was born in December 2005. My partner and I adopted him from the breeder in January 09. He had a huge hernia which we had removed and we had him de-sexed. He is micro-chipped and recently registered with the local City Council (for the next 12 months). He is up-to-date with his flea treatment and worm treatment (both due to be re-applied within the next week).
Prince had previously lived in a farm-type environment where he had other Affenpinschers running around and he lived outside in a kennel. Pete and I introduced him to the inside of a house when we adopted him. Pete loves Prince, however, Prince has always been wary of Pete and he has also displayed this disposition to other men that have come across his path. The situation has gotten much worse due to no fault of Pete’s - we have recently moved houses and Prince has decided to live outside again and hides from Pete all the time. Pete just wants to be Prince’s friend but it is not going to happen.
Prince has a very gentle disposition, he rarely barks. He loves company and thrives in the company of other dogs. He is affectionate, loves going for walks and in hot weather he loves jumping into a container of cold water. His needs are simple really.
I have been away for a few weeks and put Prince in the kennel during this time – a place I knew he would be more comfortable in whilst I was away and where he had the company of other dogs. (We both work full-time). I have thought long and hard about adopting Prince. He is such a lovely dog and he needs an environment where he feels safe and is not frightened. He would enjoy the company of another dog if his adopting parents already have a dog and he has made friends with my sister’s cat – good friends actually!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving Prince the opportunity to find a safe and secure home, where he will be loved and looked after in the manner which he deserves. I will miss him greatly.
Angela, 23/3/10

Cookie
Hi I’m Aimee and a few months ago my family and I adopted a wire haired Jack Russell “Cookie”.
He was a present for my grandma and grandpa, because my grandma had cancer and their old dog Sparky had recently died.
When we took Cookie to his new home he was so excited and brought so much joy into their lives .
He jumped up onto tables, and flew across the room superman style so he could sit with them on the couch. Everywhere they went Cookie followed.
He just clicked with them. He slept on their bed and kept my grandma company when she was at her worst. But even when she was so sick Cookie still brought a smile to her face;, he was her cheeky little boy.
He is a great watchdog and has a yappy little bark; he loves being babysat by Brenda from next door who affectionately nick -named him Cookie monster.
In my grandma’s final days Cookie wouldn’t leave her side until she went to hospital and passed away.
Cookie was sad; he didn’t seem to have that same spark about him, but these days he is loving life with my grandpa and neighbour Brenda;, he gets walked twice a day and loves playing with his toys. He follows my grandpa everywhere like he is glued to his side, and he always has to be with somebody sitting on their lap, trying to lick their face. He loves visitors and his new found home. If it wasn’t for Cookie I don’t think my grandma would’ve been as happy as she was during her final days, and Cookie has really helped my grandpa hold it together.
Thankyou Keysborough for helping us find such a wonderful dog.
Kindest Regards, Aimee , 14 years old |
Rocky
Just a short note to tell you about Rocky the black and tan Heeler aged 9 years, who thinks he is only 2 years. Tag no: 29624. He has settled in really well. He is very happy with his new friend Dallas (8 yrs) also has settled in fantastically in his new home. He loves lounging on the couch, chatting with the neighbours (2 Jack Russells) and lying under the air conditioner on hot days. He is fantastic on his lead and loves going to the parks and the beach.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to adopt such a lovely boy. My thanks to all of the staff for caring for him and doing such a great job. Photos to come.
Thanks again,
Nat |
Happy Ending
I thought you may be interested in a lovely "Happy Ending" that came to my attention recently:
One of my clients (I'm a dog walker/minder by profession) asked me to mind her 4 dogs whilst she was on holiday; it turned out that her oldest dog, at 17 years of age, had been adopted from AAPS all those years ago. He enjoys a wonderful life and still amazes the vets with his good health and longevity. A large dog, his hearing and eye site are excellent and only recently, after 2 hip replacements some years ago, has arthritis set in. During my visits to him and his brothers and sisters, we enjoyed lots of lovely cuddles. His beautiful calm face reflecting his happiness, brought tears to my eyes.
This lovely old soul is a testament to the dedication of all the staff and volunteers at AAPS.
