Success stories; August & September, 2010

Pepper & Rory

Back in January I adopted Pepper & Rory (formerly known as Shadow & Sonny, from the Herald Sun article). They are both growing into big, beautiful cats - and they know it!

Rory tries to pretend to be a tough guy, but loves to cuddle up next to me, particularly at night. He insists on helping whenever the vacuum comes out, and he LOVES to play in cardboard boxes. Pepper still dotes on him and comes running whenever he cries. She's a big flirt, showing off whenever we have visitors, and likes to try to sneak onto your lap when you aren't looking. They both love playing in their cat run (sited in the shade to protect Rory's pink ears & nose). Pepper's sweet little baby meow is offset by Rory's lack of volume control. We're working on a system of sign language for Rory - which basically means that, like any cat, he understands what we want and completely ignores it!

They really are two great little characters, and I couldn't imagine not having them here. Thank you to everyone at AAPS for saving them both and for letting them into my life.

Alfie

Apologies it has taken so long to send thru an update. We adopted Alfie (previously Jimney) from AAPS in Feb last year. It took a couple of weeks for Alfie to settle in, he wasn't used to home living not quite sure what pats were, that its not ok behaviour to do body slides at speed across the coffee table etc (he had been found wandering the streets). He very quickly adapted and his little dude personality shone thru. He melts hearts wherever he goes and and has many people wanting to take him home. He has us well trained and enjoys letting us know how he is feeling thru his very expressive looks. I thought this photo showed it well. AAPS Thank you so much for doing what you do and bringing Alfie into our lives!

Lily

This is Lily (formally known as Cuddles) I took her last Christmas and wanted you to know she is much loved and most of the time quite well behaved.....
She has learned to swim at the beach near home and plays brilliantly with other dogs and children.
She was run over by a horse in January and has recovered well from a broken leg.During the examination the vet discovered that her other leg had been broken sometime earlier also...What a first 12months she must have had before I got her.
Anyway, a good outcome for all concerned. She is now 19mths old and very much a part of the dog scene in Port Melbourne.
Best regards
Luke

Daphne

Just a quick update on how Lola is doing. She's now called Daphne, and has settled in like a dream! The dogs were initially highly excited by her arrival but quickly got over it and now pay hardly any attention to her at all! She meanwhile finds it great fun to hide around the house and attack the dogs when they least expect it! She is halfway through her FIV vaccination course, but will never be an outside cat (just a worried mother I guess!). She is just so loveable, we couldn't be happier! A very special thank you to Sue and Arabella, who were so patient and went the extra mile spending time with me to ensure there would be no dog/cat upsets, and thankfully everything's gone brilliantly! Also thank you to Fiona, the lady in the cattery that Sunday we adopted her. You were so helpful and you suggested Daphne as a good choice, how right you were! Keep up the great work ladies, you make such a difference to animals in need! As a vet nurse myself I deeply admire the work you all do, and thank you again for giving us our gorgeous girl! We'll definitely see you in the future.

Tasha

I adopted Tasha (known as Tasha2) in July 2009. Tasha definitely chose me. I was confronted with so many cats to choose from but Tasha brushed herself against my leg and I knew I was going to take her. A few days later I received a text from the shelter telling me she was 'Cat of the Day'! It didn't surprise me. She was given a huge cat bed, toys and food as her prize. Despite having her tail amputated, due to a previous injury, she is delightful. I live alone so she and I quickly developed a very close bond. We have a routine together in the morning. Before I leave for work, she jumps on my bed, knuzzles into me and follows me around everywhere. When I arrive home from work, as soon as I turn my key in the door lock I can see through the stain glass window Tasha trotting towards the door and then standing on her hind legs clawing the door. Her head pokes around the door as I open it. She then proceeds to follow me everywhere again. I cannot sit down on the sofa for more than 10 seconds without Tasha jumping on my lap and making herself comfortable. She even walks all over my laptop whilst I'm trying to work on it, sits right on top of jigsaws whilst I'm doing them and then proceeds to screw up what I've already done! It's hilarious. I have even had a photo taken of her and have had it professionally framed. I love her so much. Thank you for giving me such an adorable companion.

Kind regards, Helen and Tasha.

Polly

We adopted Polly approximately 12 months ago. She is a very gentle and loving dog to us and our granddaughter. Thank you so much for bringing us together. May you have many blessings for your work to help the animals, we all know how much they need it.
Kind regards
Rosemary

Buddy

We recently adopted a beautiful dog from you.. Buddy (aka Mia)
Just thought you might like some photos of her.

Dim Sim

Here is our Dim Sim!!! The name may not sound like your average household family pet... but he is! This little wee kitten whom you had called Kennedy has just fitted right in with us and all of our friends (including the friends dog). Even though this kitten has one funny eye it has seemed to give him so much more personality!
He picked us when he saw us! Originally we went out looking for a short haired black cat! But no.... this cute fluffy white bung eyed thing kept trying! And he hit the heart! And that has only grown!
We love our little bung eyed fluffy white kitten and thank all of the crew for bringing our new family member to our house.

Thank you for giving us this beautiful animal, Kind Regards, Nick, Holly and Sam

Keira

We got Keira in early June. It was a rainy Saturday and we just visiting the pound for a ‘look.’ We came home 30 minutes later with Keira.
She was so happy when she arrived home that she rolled all over the floor. When she settled down that night, on the floor between my partner and I, she gave us both a lick on the cheek. We think she was saying “thank you.” Since then she has settled in beautifully. She loves chasing the ball around the dog park and ignoring all the other dogs. She also loves to cuddle, she uses her little arms sometimes and wraps them around you.
This picture is of her with her cousin, Mac. When Keira first met Mac, she couldn’t stop licking his face. We love her very much.

Lobo

Woof woof .as you can see,I have girlfriend now ,noojee(aboriginal for content)2months old wolfhound cross.i love my new life. I live inside wih my two legged friends, and I also sleep on the end of the bed,my master takes me everywhere.you might remember me lobo the german wirehair pointer.i departed your establishment on the 11.10 08.thanks for doing all you can for my four legged friends.

Yippee

I wanted to let you know everything is going smoothly. Yippee (I changed his name... He already responds to his new one) is settling in better then I expected. I'm amazed at how well behaved & adjusted he is. His previous owners did a wonderful job with him, for which I am extremely grateful. Walking is still a bit of a power struggle, but we are getting there!!

I just wanted to thank you & everyone at the shelter for steering me in the right direction. Maybe down the track, I'll be back to adopt another dog. But for now, Yippee is more then enough for me and I'm learning how to look after and live with one dog.

Ty

Ty has settled in well into our home and family. He loves to spend lots of time with us and loves lots of cuddles. Thank you so much for operating on Ty's eyes and giving him a chance at a happy life. We are thrilled to have him in our family and I am sure Ty is now going to have the wonderful life he deserves.
Having so much fun Ty, Jade, Harrison, Paula and Eric

Harvey

Just wanting to give you an update on Harvey. He has settled in fantastically although I think I should have called him Shadow. The first night he was unsettled and wandered around the house, eventually sleeping by my bed. He appears house trained- no accidents yet and goes to the door to go to the toilet. He does love his food and inhales anything in his path although we have learnt some manners and now knows to be more gentle in taking food and to sit and wait when he is being fed. Hard to say what his favorite is yet as he seems to love everything and makes short work of marrow bones.

He sits on command but struggles to stay or drop/lie down but with some persistence he will get there. It seems he has had some training before or he is just a really quick learner- He said to say he was a quick learner. He has met some other dogs who are his new cousins and gets along great with them and he is fond of children too.

He is just the most lovely little(or large as would be the case)man and he fits into my life just fantastically. He does not seem to be pining for his old owners and appears to be happy and contented with his new home. I cannot believe someone would not have come looking for him.

He is great on the lead and his wounds are healing just fine. He asked me to thank you for taking care of him until I got him and to say hi to the friends he made in there and hopes they all find great homes too.
Thanks for Harvey, Tina

Salem

This is Salem, aka Spartacus the 3 legged kitty who I adopted in June.
I sat with Salem in the back of the car all the way back to Carlton as he wouldn't sit still in his cardboard box. He sat on my lap and peeped out the window just like a dog. I'm sure he would've hung his head out too if I let him! He started out as the world's most smoochy cat, but once he got comfortable with Ari (Aka Snowy the deaf cat I adopted in February) and Lupe there was too much playing to be had for mum cuddles.

Every morning when my partner leaves for work, he hops in like a bunny, struggles up onto the bed and sits on my back and begins to chew and yank on my hair. If I decide to cover my hair he just comes around to the front of my face and eats my fringe instead! He also likes to drape himself around my neck like a fur scarf and dangles his silly back leg over my shoulder.
Unfortunately, Salem has extremely long and incredibly sharp claws, so Lupe and Ari don't really fancy play fighting with him so it really just turns into them running away from him!

I love my little cripple and he was the perfect choice to join my little fur family.

Cleopatra

We adopted a kitten by the name of Jelly Belly, last Saturday. We have named her Cleopatra.. or Cleo for short. She is absolutely beautiful and fitting in well with all the family. In fact, taking over the house. Our dog - Biggles (mini daschund), just wants to play but Cleo has other ideas. She sits proudly on the mantle piece above the heater, watching the world go by. She very affectionate, loveable and enjoys a cuddle.

Thank you to the Keysborough animal shelter and to her foster mum for looking after her while she was very young and for letting us have Cleopatra as part of our family.

Miss Mooks

Several months ago we adopted one of your cats. At the time you were calling her 'Honey' and I believe she was with you for 3-4 months. Just wanted you to know that she has settled in fine and is best friends with our existing cat.

Here she is, her name is Miss Mooks...

Georgie

Hi. My name is Georgie. I’m a very lucky 6 month old girl and I’ve been living with my new family for about 4 months. I have a new mummy and a new daddy and I even have a big sister. My big sister, Romy, looks just like me and she’s just like my cat mummy.

My first day in my new house was fun. I purred the moment I was let out of my box and I haven’t stopped since. I wanted to be part of the action from the very first day and I was glad that Romy was happy to have a kitten. She didn’t want to eat her dinner until she saw that I was eating. Now I won’t leave her alone when she tries to eat!!

My sister Romy and I love to wrestle and play together and sometimes we even sleep with each other. We have lots of great toys and furniture to play with because we get spoilt.

Thank you for finding me a great new home and family. We are all very happy together.

Digit

My partner Stephen and I went to AAPS to just have a look. On our way out, empty handed, I saw a note on the board – something along the lines of “Pug x Griffon, Female, desexed” – I knew it was worth a shot. We took Pew to meet her and that was it! We had to have this dog – she didn’t have a name, but had an ID number. The name Digit was chosen! A week of preparation later and we picked her up. She is a natural in the car!
She was shown the back yard and shown the rules by Pew, who did not seem happy to be sharing her Mum’s love! Inside she met Minchin, who carefully inched up to Digit’s face – a nose lick later and that was Digit’s introduction to Minchin. Loki met her and promptly went outside. So far, so good. She had a quick bath and a small dinner (who could eat after that much excitement?) That night we all were up on the couch - Pew on the left, Minchin on the right and Digit right in the middle on her back as if she simply belonged there.
That night there was a bit of an upset tummy from the diet change which woke us up (our dogs sleep on the floor at the foot of our bed) – a 7am carpet clean and a showing her that outside is for poop (if you can hold on, it seems!)
On her second day I took her on a drive – usually when we go out, so do the dogs! We had to get her used to the people and places we go, so I started ASAP – from Dandenong to my parents house, an aged care centre (our dogs are encouraged to be aged care hostel visit dogs once or twice a month) then on to Seville where she met my sisters boxers, then a farm – who knew such a little tank of a dog could run that fast?! She was after the horses, cows, alpacas and even the two peacocks – but always ran back to me when called.
One last stop and then it was home time to a bigger bowl of food. Even some chook giblets afterwards, taking them so daintily from my hand. She slept all night through and no accidents! She asks to go out to refresh herself and sits nicely. It’s a wonder why she wound up with AAPS, but now she is with us, even having her own Facebook page (her new parents are a little nerdy) – anyway, here is a picture of Didgy in the car, laying down politely like the lovely lady she is.

Taffy

Taffy has settled so well into home life and loves his home comforts, as you can see in the photos !!!! he has that stubbon Greyhound streak in him just like Nicky said to expect but all the loving he gives us far outways that !!!! He gets on so well with his new sister Bella (whippet X) and they are great company for one another. He has adapted so well to a home life after his life as a racer and I would recommend a greyhound to anyone looking for a loving pet who doesn,t need a horendous amount of excercise but does enjoy his daily walk, and adores his greyhound treats every morning and night which he leads us to the cupboard for just in case we forget !!!

I recommend the AAPS to anyone looking to give a loving home to a animal, keep up your wonderful work.

Kind Regards, Jane
