Hugo is growing like topsy - he's over 20kg, and still has a long way to go to grow into both his skin and his paws. He's certainly prepared to eat all that he needs - and more. After years of German Shepherds it's a bit of a shock to see a dog so obsessed with his (and everybody else's) food. He's full of energy for brief periods, then needs to have a long lie down. Brit is very tolerant of him, letting him quite literally clamber all over her while she's resting, although she will put him in his place when his exuberance gets too much, or if he gets too close to her food while she's still eating it. There's no doubt who's top dog.
Brit has an enthusiasm for chasing balls that borders on obsession; she is happy to run up and down the paddock until she drops. Hugo, although he's a retriever, seems generally happy to watch until Brit has brought the ball most of the way back. Then he trots up to Brit and she drops it for him to bring the rest of the way.
As Hugo is getting bigger he and Brit play together more and more. One of their favourite activities seems to be for Hugo to chase Brit around the yard. Brit can easily out-distance him, but she slows down and glances back over her shoulder to make sure he's still there, stopping occasionally for him to catch up for a brief tussle before loping off again. He needs a very long lie-down after that.
We take them for walks down the street to socialise them. Everybody adores Hugo of course, but Brit gets lots of pats too. They are both very good with people socially, although Brit is appropriately territorial if a stranger comes on to the property. Nothing too aggressive, just lots of barking to let us know someone is there and to let them know they're on her turf.
They have been paddling in a stream - Brit loves the water, but Hugo wasn't too sure at first, until he got used to the idea. They have also been for a swim in a lake. Again it took Hugo a few minutes to come to terms with it, but he was soon swimming around after Brit.
So - we are happy and they are happy. An excellent outcome. We now have you to thank for three wonderful companions.
I have attached a few photos of them doing their thing(s) in the paddock.
Kind regards, John & Linda
