Success stories
Rex

Have just been reading the new home stories and am inspired to let you know about my beautiful boy REX.

I adopted him as an 8 week old kitten from AAPS Keysborough back in December 2003. I firmly believe he is of the understanding that he owns our home – that I am a mere visitor.

He has an enclosure down the side of the house with a “flap” in the window so he can come and go as he pleases, can’t get to the birds etc and other cats, cars etc can’t get to him. Here in the photo he is on his purpose built platform above the hot water service in his enclosure where he can see out into the street and get nice warm air out of the hot water service. He is doing really well and is a very loving and affectionate companion, wherever I am – Rex is not far away.

I have no regrets about adopting him – definitely one of the best things I’ve done.

Regards, Amanda

Queenie

-----------

Hello to everyone at AAPS! Thankyou for looking after me so well when I was there as Barbra. On the 4th January, my new mum came and adopted me and took me home to Tasmania! She came a long way to see me as she saw me on the website and fell in love with me! I went home on the plane with her in a pet carrier and I quite enjoyed the trip. I have settled in really well here with the whole family and really love them all (including Charlie the cockatiel)! I am so glad to have found my forever family.
P.S. A note from Mum: Hello to Nicky and all the lovely staff at Keysborough, we all love Queenie so much, she is a lovely addition to our family and is just the most wonderful cat in every way. It has been a wonderful experience adopting a cat, she is a gentle and well mannered girl~but still playful at times which is just lovely for the children.
We really feel blessed with Queenie and would recommend to anyone to adopt an adult cat.
Thanks once again to the wonderful staff at AAPS, you do an absolutely wonderful job. Kindest regards to all, and next time we are in Melbourne we will come for a visit!
Best wishes the Clark Family, Tasmania.

Bronson

----------

Hi everyone this is Angelique. I was a volunteer at your shelter last February. I enjoyed working alongside Leigh, Mick, Terese, Christine and Jill and I thank them for a wonderful experience, (I really miss Jade the greyhound cross).

I have since started a new job and am at uni full time, which left me little time to volunteer ; hopefully I will be able to volunteer again in the near future. However the reason I'm writing is to fill you in on Bronson's status.

He is my beautiful American Staffy, which I adopted from your shelter. My friend found him in the middle of the road one night. She stopped her car and called him over and he actually tried to jump in her car window. so she opened the door and he jumped in her car. She called me and asked if I could keep him for the night, so I did. Poor Bronson was riddled with fleas and had quite a few scars on him. Despite this he was still a loving, affectionate, adoring dog! In the morning we brought him to the shelter where he was taken into the quarantine section and cared for by Terese (thank- you Terese ). I said from the start that if nobody claimed him thenI would like to adopt him.

It turned out that no-one did claim Bronson, maybe for the better as he didn't seem to be looked after properly. After Bronson was micro -chipped and desexed I was free to take him home. I have to admit he was quite a handful at the beginning but he may well have still been a puppy, as we don't know exactly how old he is. After a while he settled in to his new home; he now loves his indoor, relaxed lifestyle. Bronson enjoys daily walks, where he makes me stop and say hello to both people and dogs. He is one of the friendliest, funniest and loving dogs you will ever meet (He barks in his sleep). Adopting him was the best decision i ever made!!

Ginga

Just wanted to let you know the progress of our new girl 'Ginga'. She has settled in like a dream, I sometimes wonder if she thinks she has died and gone to heaven? We have two dog beds, one in a garden shed and a day one out under cover but she prefers to sleep in the dirt which is a bit of a worry but we have started to cover up the dirt patch she loves and she slept in her chair last night. We discovered quite by accident that she prefers to sleep in a chair as opposed to on a dog bed! Quite strange but one doesn't know what she had in her past life. When she comes inside she doesn't move from her mat which is amazing. We thought this would take some training. The kids adore her and she them. We took her to Sorrento on the weekend and she just played with the kids up and down the street following them on their skateboards and playing with balls all day and crashed at night.

I have sent you a photo of her new family. Thanks again for all your help.

Hugo & Brit

Hugo is growing like topsy - he's over 20kg, and still has a long way to go to grow into both his skin and his paws. He's certainly prepared to eat all that he needs - and more. After years of German Shepherds it's a bit of a shock to see a dog so obsessed with his (and everybody else's) food. He's full of energy for brief periods, then needs to have a long lie down. Brit is very tolerant of him, letting him quite literally clamber all over her while she's resting, although she will put him in his place when his exuberance gets too much, or if he gets too close to her food while she's still eating it. There's no doubt who's top dog.

Brit has an enthusiasm for chasing balls that borders on obsession; she is happy to run up and down the paddock until she drops. Hugo, although he's a retriever, seems generally happy to watch until Brit has brought the ball most of the way back. Then he trots up to Brit and she drops it for him to bring the rest of the way.

As Hugo is getting bigger he and Brit play together more and more. One of their favourite activities seems to be for Hugo to chase Brit around the yard. Brit can easily out-distance him, but she slows down and glances back over her shoulder to make sure he's still there, stopping occasionally for him to catch up for a brief tussle before loping off again. He needs a very long lie-down after that.

We take them for walks down the street to socialise them. Everybody adores Hugo of course, but Brit gets lots of pats too. They are both very good with people socially, although Brit is appropriately territorial if a stranger comes on to the property. Nothing too aggressive, just lots of barking to let us know someone is there and to let them know they're on her turf.

They have been paddling in a stream - Brit loves the water, but Hugo wasn't too sure at first, until he got used to the idea. They have also been for a swim in a lake. Again it took Hugo a few minutes to come to terms with it, but he was soon swimming around after Brit.

So - we are happy and they are happy. An excellent outcome. We now have you to thank for three wonderful companions.

I have attached a few photos of them doing their thing(s) in the paddock.

Kind regards, John & Linda

Jerry

Hi we adopted Jerry on the 6th of July 2005. He is a very affectionate and loyal dog. He has done pretty well at obedience, passing his first grading just over a month from when we adopted him, securing third place out of 12 dogs.

He has been on holiday with us to Mildura and Port Arlington, there are some photos attached of him at the beach and with his third place ribbon. He has spades of personality which we adore. He now has a little sister, Milly, we got her in February 2006, they are inseparable. Thank you so much for Jerry and keep up the good work, Oh and Jerry says "Woof".

Jerry, Milly, Amanda and Alan.
