Success stories
Molly

I thought it was about time I dropped you a line to let you know how Miss Molly is doing.
Our big baby (10-12 mth old deerhound X) is now right at home and getting along well with our two cats (who we adopted in 2003 from AAPS).
Below a photo of Molly in her soft crate (she loves it) and Sheba keeping guard on top!!!!

We fell in love with Molly about 4 months ago (ANZAC day) but were worried how the Queens (cats) would take to a new addition. We wanted a smooth transition for Molly, the Cats and ourselves so I spoke at length with the very patient Tamara and Stuart from Underdog Dog Training and had a long chat to Nicki on the phone.

You might remember that Molly did a week of boarding and training with Tamara and Stuart from Underdog Dog Training, this was with out a doubt the best thing we have done. Don’t get me wrong it was SO hard to have adopted ‘our’ dog but not be able to bring her home, but after a week……..we picked up our puppy with new manners! Molly had learnt to sit, drop and walk beautifully on a loose lead AND most importantly of all had been socialised with cats.

We brought Molly home with confidence and a small amount of nerves, It had been 20 odd years since we had a puppy in the house (our last dog past away at the ripe old age of 15 aprox 5 yrs ago) but we were excited. Since then time has been flying by, between walks, playing, buying new toys! (she has thrown one over the fence!) and training we have been kept quite busy.

Below, Molly with her favourite toy………..the one that ended up over the fence.

Some of you might have seen us attending the Training held at the shelter and we have gone on to more advanced training where Molly won a prize for ‘Most improved Dog’ we were very proud, although she is yet to pass the class (we hope this time around!) but we’ll keep at it.

Below, Molly wearing her new coat.

Molly is such a smart wonderful dog and has bonded with each of us in the family in different ways; we couldn’t imagine not having her around. She like all young dogs gets over excited, digs all the usual things but the ‘pain’ is far out weighed by the pleasure. I can’t say enough about Tamara and Stuart (Underdog Dog Training) they have helped us really enjoy Molly, by training us as much as training Molly. Last but by no means least, THANKYOU to all the staff and volunteers who loved and cared for Molly before she came to us. I’m sure she is so gentle, loving and trusting because of the excellent care and affection she received at AAPS.

Oh by the way she still likes to try and sit in your lap!!! THANKS AGAIN Kind regards Diva and Family including Ricki, Sheba and Miss Molly.

Neko

We can’t thank you enough for our new little Angel. Neko (nee Rubi) has settled into our home very well after only a week and a half and we love her to bits. Although she can be a bit of a minx, we could not have asked for a more beautiful, affectionate and willing to please girl. She is slowly putting on a bit of weight and enjoys her walks. She is particularly polite when meeting other four legged friends and loves a smooch. She is an absolute sweetheart.

Bob

As promised I said I would update on Bob’s progress. He is the most gorgeous cat. He settled in very well and actually owns my Unit. He sleeps at the end of my bed, but occasionally moves around near my feet. At his size he is not easy to move with a nudge of a toe, so I have to adjust my sleeping pattern. Sometimes I find myself sleeping sideways.

I recently went to the Cat Show at the Dallas Brooks hall and took his photos; a number of people claim that he could be a Maine Coon. He’s just my Bob. All my family and friends love him and he loves sitting on their knees. I am sure that the comment would be ‘He has a grand life now’

Bonnie and Byron (now Bro)

Hey all,
I got 5 yo brother & sister Staffradors Bonnie and Byron (now Bro) from you guys on 2nd June. Bro came with an ear infection which cleared up after 2 weeks.

They're both happy, affectionate, clever dogs. They're easy to train, both give good eye contact, listen well, and learn quick. They're really great, hassel-free dogs.

Bro is a gentleman: calm, well mannered and obedient. He's very laid back about life and his tail always gently wagging. Bonnie on the other hand was excitable and adventurous from day one. Her tail is either in neutral or doing 9000 RPM. She's also obedient but more easily distracted. Bro inherited the Labrador genes both in looks and nature, Bonnie the Staffy genes.

In the first few days, just for fun and to see their reaction I made a stupid play noise but remained sitting quietly, acting all innocent. Bro didn't bother to get up from his mat. He raised his head, ears pricked and scrutinized me with a puzzled expression, analyzing me for clues to interpret this strange new sound. But in Bonnies world, life is too short for philosophy! She rushed over, "That sounds fun! You must wanna play!" as she wagged her whole body. She's a real dag.

Most of my life I've had a dog, but this is the first time I've had a pair. Anyone considering getting a dog, I'd really urge them to consider getting a matched pair, especially the needy breeds like Staffys. It's amusing to watch their antics and when you leave they keep each other company so there's no seperation anxiety. I'll never again have a lone dog, I look back on it now as unnatural, even bordering on cruel.

These two are pretty much inseperable, 5 minutes apart and they greet as though it's been weeks. They were up for individual sale but I'm really happy they stayed together.

To all at the shelter, thanks for the new pack members,
Richard Suda

Lucky

It's about time we got in touch ! Lucky has settled in so well. Its been a bit of a journey as he was just so nervous to begin with. He wouldnt come into the house the first day and thought that Curly , his new sister, was so bold going into the house.

He has progressed to sleeping on the couch with Curly at night and during the evening whilst we are allowed to use the couch , he is on his bed ,sometimes with his ''ruggy" over the top of him. ( see the pictures)

He is a very dear boy who we love so much. He is slowly learning to accept affection from us and is giving it back also. Its a slow journey but its so rewarding for both him and us. Thank you for taking care of him for as long as you all did. He is such a happy boy now. Hope all you wonderful people are well and getting lots of lovely homes for all your orphans.

Take care.

Milly Miley Moo

Just a little update on our darling Milly, Miley, Moo as we affectionately call her.

When I saw Milly's photo I was in love....I had been looking on the website for awhile and then... there she was.

I was nervous when I went to visit, I already have a female kelpie who we rescued 10 yrs ago and I was wondering how they would go.

The staff at keysborough are angels and Nicky helped us through the whole process. Introducing the girls, paperwork and then we were off.

Like Missy (Furry nanny as we affectionately call her), we now feel like we have known Milly all our lives. Both of the girls are relaxed and are lapping up the love and cuddles. By the way... Milly is a kissaholic just like Furry Nanny is. :)

Milly was very unsure of herself when she first arrived, she is thoroughly obedient, house trained and still braces herself when I take her for drives in the car (as she must have been used to a ute), I think she thinks her new mum is a granny compared. :) Now she is relaxed, starting to really trust us and she is throughly enjoying the scenery and walks and so is her mummy one. :)

Milly has given us all a new lease on life. I was bracing myself for having to say 'goodbye' to my darling Furry Nanny, but ..... now she has a new lease on life. She is leading the walks daily with Milly, Furry Nanny is frisky and Milly seems to be the more sensible one! :) (Milly is & and Furry is.. over 12 at least!).

Well what can I say. If you are thinking about adopting a dog. Do consider the older ones. They truly are beautiful. We have had no trouble settling the girls it has been a true delight! I have had two now and they have brought nothing but joy to our home. They are loyal, kind and very gentle and we wouldn't want to think of life without them. I highly recommend AAPS. The staff are great, caring and helping you in the process as much as possible. I highly recommend them! Much love and kisses from us all

PS: Here is a photo (above) of the two girls and my daughter relaxing on the doona. Life is good and the other photo is of Millie (below) in her self chosen bed.. my reading chair and there she sleeps every night. Alot more relaxed than when we took this first photo which was on the first night.

Taz

I invited two year old Taz to live with us almost two weeks ago now and thought I'd give you an update of how he's been going.
He loves his new home; he has one bed for outside and one bed inside because he likes to be wherever we are and he sleeps inside. He barks very rarely, only when he thinks a stranger is getting a
little close to our house. He likes our 15 year old cat Charlie and is so obedient he won't even eat her food when she walks away and Charlie doesn't mind him one little bit.
Today I let him off leash for the first time in the park to play fetch and sniff around the trees and generally just be a dog and I think he had alot of fun. I can't wait till it's summer to take him to the country and the beach to go swimming!
He is a great addition to the family. Thanks so much for taking care of him.
I've attached some photos: one of Taz and my cat being lazy bums on a cold day and one of him showing off his gorgeous face.
Thanks again
Aimee

Corey

Since we have taken Corey home, he has been a bundle of joy.  He has become a part of our furniture & most of all Simba’s best mate (our Golden Retriever).  He loves squeaky toys & his AFL football.  He loves his swimming every week & I think he might have a girlfriend, Summer!  He is affectionate & obedient – well most of the timeJ

I would like to thank AAPS for encouraging us to adopt Corey.  It’s the best decision we have made & Simba thinks so too! Thankyou.

Jett and Min

My name is Jett, and you probably wouldn’t remember me because it was about 3 years ago that I arrived at your shelter as a tiny kitten. I was what you’d call the ‘runt’ of the litter. The only big thing about me (apart from my oversized ears!) was my personality. When I was about 12 weeks old, a nice couple came in to visit me. The lady was very excited, but the man looked somewhat reluctant. I got the impression he was still trying to work out what he’d been talked into! I liked both of them very much, and they must have liked me too, because they took me all the way to their home in Geelong.

I became very comfortable in my new home… they just about let me run the place! A couple of times I ventured outside, and went too far. There are some other big cats in our street that try to bully the little guys. Now I just stick to looking after my property. When I had been with mum and dad for two years, they decided that it might be time to get me a buddy. Mum was worried about getting a big friend because the other big cats in our ‘hood had given me a hard time. One morning they told me they were going to visit the place that had looked after me until I moved in with them. When they came home, I was shocked to see that they really had brought a little sister home with them! I had become quite accustomed to ruling our house, and didn’t like the look of this at all. I’m a bit embarrassed to say this now, but I really gave Min a hard time when she came home with mum and dad. I was worried they had decided to replace me! But Mum made sure that she gave me lots of cuddles still (which are my favourite thing in the world), and she was really on the ball if I ever tried to razz Min up a bit. You see, Min might be my ‘little’ sister, but she’s actually older than me. Mum and Dad wanted to rescue an adult cat to be my friend, and it has worked out well. Even when I try to chomp on Min’s tail, she just looks at me as if to say “yeah, whatever, little bro!” Plus, when she came home, she was really scrawny and easy to push around. Now mum and dad say she looks like she’s swallowed a 2 litre coke bottle! Min has settled in with us well, and we are a very happy family. Mum will attach some photos of us to this update… she and dad get a bit carried away with the ‘proud parent’ thing!

Pumpkin

My husband and I had been discussing the idea of adding a family member for quite some time…. The push we needed came when we read the Herald Sun and saw a notice for an open day encouraging the adoption of cats. My husband had sworn that he had wanted a kitten, but I was a sucker for the older cats, thinking that they also needed love and care despite their age.

We jumped onto the AAPS website and looked at the cats online. We immediately saw the beautiful and feminine face of an 8 year old champagne and white cat called “Pumpkin”. We jotted down her details and decided that if she hadn’t already found a mummy and daddy by the time we got there, we’d take her!

Having had to work the next morning, we arrived late to the shelter. I remember having a heavy feeling in my stomach that Pumpkin had been snapped up already. When we arrived, I was so relieved (and yet, sad) to see that she had not yet been adopted…. 30 seconds alone with her and we were hooked. She had a bum on her that was 30cm wide when sitting and felt like cotton wool to touch… What a stunner!

Her new home took some getting used to…. Hiding behind the couch for 2 days before venturing to the lounge room, and her food, and then eventually taking over the household and plonking her boomba bum anywhere she likes! She loves sitting in front of the heater, playing soccer with her little pink bouncy ball, sitting at the front door and talking to birds, running around our legs when we have just gotten out of the shower (Not so good for us!) and could handle being scratched under the chin for days on end. And her favourite habit of all…. Eating! Without fail, we are woken to her scratching our wardrobe door in an attempt to get some chow! Her Aunty Rachael (who is our family Vet and a very close friend) has politely advised us that she could do to shed some weight!

We love Pumpkin with all our hearts. She makes us laugh on a daily basis, and is a beautiful charismatic family member. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to share our love with our gorgeous “Pumpi”. The volunteers at the AAPS are a fabulous bunch who should be commended for the dignity and care in which they treat the animals.

Rocky

Hello all you wonderfull people at the AAPS I just thought Id let you know how Rockys first week and a bit has been.

Firstly let me say a BIG THANKYOU to Jill for introducing me to Rocky; what a wonderfull boy he is. I love him so much; he looks after our puppy Pasha and he's so tolerant and paitient (Pasha is full on always jumping on him). They just play or sleep in there Day beds together; it's so cute.

As you can hopefully see Rocky has put on weight and he even eats my cooking!! (not many people do) haha.
The first 3 photos are of Day one then there some taken during the week inside and the last few I just took then so you can see how hes going.
He is so clever!! He's getting along with the Cat Jasper though Im not leaving them alone as yet but hes great with the Horses.
He wasn't to sure on day one but now hes my shaddow; comes at feeding times with me. He just lies by the gate and waits for me.
Pat adores him as well and he's great with Jack, Pats 6 year old son. Hopefully I will be able to make the trip over to help with the fundraising and Mum and Dad want a Kitty Cat as they lost there beloved baby Munckin a few months ago and they and her sister are missing her greatly.
I'll send some more updates soon Ill even get a photo of him with the bigger kids, all the ponies.

Curtis

This is our beautiful boy Curtis, ( our three legged baby ) that we adopted from the shelter. I am sure that you remember him .

I am sending these for your enjoyment.
I got my son JOSEPH to take these.
I call Curtis my little GRANDPA .. " LIFE'S JUST ALL TO TIRING " ENJOY A LAUGH.

Sparky

It’s me, Sparky. Thanks for letting me go to live with Helen and Chippy, what a place to live! I am spoilt rotten. I sleep on the bed, go to the hairdresser regularly and even go away for weekends to Phillip Island. Mum minds her friends dog Eddie sometimes. I love it when he comes as I have two friends to jump on and annoy. I have learnt to sit, shake hands and sit at the kerb when we go for walks.
Thankyou for finding me a new house I love them and they love me. I will try to come and visit you soon,

Lots of woofs and licks,
Sparky

PS Here is a photo of me and Chippy, I am the cute white one.
