Success stories
Pang

Hi,

I read the other stories on your website and thought I would tell you how Tag no. 22341 is going:

I met my little dog for the first time when she was 5mths old at AAPS (September, 2005). She had been found straying and no one was sure of her past. One of the staff let us have some time in one of the free-roam areas together where she proceeded to run at light speed around the enclosure. Maybe I should have realized then that she was going to be a very active dog (perhaps too much at times for a first time dog owner!) but a good quality dog training school taught the both of us how to work with each other. The first time I put her on a lead it was like walking a kite, she was all over the place.

She was very unfortunate to be stuck with the name “Panshanger” (Pang for short) because of a bet with some work colleges, but from day one she responded to it and it always gets laughs wherever we go. The other strange thing about Panshanger is her background; nobody knows for certain what she is. Possibilities have been Collie x Whippet, Whippet with upright ears, Pharaoh Hound x Whippet, Kelpie x Whippet, etc.

Pang is an extremely fast dog and once we finished Obedience Training I began Agility Training with her. This has been a fantastic dog sport to get involved in and we have just started trialing. She loves jumping and running especially if there is a tennis ball involved. Having some whippet in her makes her a total lounge lizard when she is not running and if she is not hanging around the kitchen checking for un-owned food, she is under the doona in bed. Food, tennis balls and doonas are her favorite things.

Pang goes everywhere with me and has now been to 5 states in Australia including accompanying me on a work-trip to Western Australia. It seemed her favorite destination was Margaret River because it was hot enough to sleep on the deck and there we a lot of other dogs to play Frisbee with. Thanks for saving her for me! Penny

Morris and Jerry

We adopted Morris and Jerry in January 2006. It’s been a year of love, entertainment and fun with our two cats. They are very much brothers now, they look out for each other and play together but annoy each other equally as much! We are so happy that we made the decision to adopt two cats and they show us their appreciation everyday.

They want to have a few words now so I will hand it over to them…

Morris: “I have had to teach Jerry a thing or two since becoming his big brother in January 2006. With myself being rather more mature than he is, I have taught him some skills on how to become a respectable adult Cat. He is almost two now and Im going on four so I will always be the one who knows more than what he does! We play fight alot in the backyard. Sometimes I let him wash my head and for a moment I forget it is Jerry giving me a wash! I wouldn’t be caught dead washing him!”

Jerry: “Well Morris might think he knows everything, but I’m cleverer than him. Everyone who comes to visit us always fuss over me because I’m the crazy wild cat with the yellow eyes! Sometimes I sneak outside when mum and dad are not looking which Morris is never quick enough to do that! I’m also faster when it comes to chasing each other around the house and did I mention that I seem to know the right times to hang around my mum when there is a treat on offer?!?”

Morris and Jerry: “We are both so happy living together with our mum and dad. We have everything we could ever want now and we have the company of each other. We know how lucky we are that places like AAPS exist to help homeless animals find forever homes. Thank you for all the wonderful work you do”

The cats have handed it back to us now to sign off. Thank you once again to all staff at the AAPS and hope you enjoy these latest pics of Morris and Jerry! Talk to you again in another year!

Regards, Ros and Jack

Jess

Hi AAPS,

Just a quick update on Jess. What a joy she is. So obedient and lovable (even to Gypsy the cat). She has settled in well and loves coming to the horse paddock with me every day. She has lots to see and explore, then cools off in the horse trough. She love to run beside me while Im riding. Thank you for suggesting I meet her; she really is the BEST and has fitted in so well.

I so hope everyone looking for a new companion gives a shelter dog a chance.

Regards, Rose and Jess

Roofy and Bruce

Hello,

Just thought we would let you know the updates of Roofy (June 2006) and Bruce (March 2007).

Roofy is such a beautiful cat and settled in well. He is a very friendly smoochy cat as your description said. We initially wanted a younger cat (Roofy was 5), but upon walking past his enclosure he kept miaowing at us, and when the cage door was opened he came and lay on his back wanting his tummy rubbed, and that won us over. He picked us. He still does that and I now cannot go outside without him following me and wanting his tummy rubbed. He is quite playful and great with the kids.

We have now had Bruce for 4 weeks. He is such a little character. He isn’t scared of anything and lets our dog know who’s boss. The kids love him and he sleeps on my daughter’s bed. She calls him her cat and Roofy is mine. He plays well with Roofy and they have a rough and tumble around the cubby I made for them (a scratch post and box with an old tablecloth over the top). They also chase around it. Being an ex-stray he eats like every meal is his last, so we try to watch his weight as his stomach is looking a bit large. He will eat what I find hard to get the other cats to eat (chicken necks and Hill’s TD for their teeth). He is getting fat but his teeth are clean! After his own food he will try to eat the other cat’s. He is friendly and sociable. I quite often hear my son yell out “Bruce is mad attacking” (have a mad/crazy attack), running around the house with dilated pupils as cats do. He follows the kids around the garden and wants to be part of it.

Our old cat likes them both, he is a very timid cat and seems to be able to tolerate new cats in his home better than next door’s cats in his yard. He is his own cat. They all live well together.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to adopt these cats. We saw so many other beautiful cats with great personalities in need of a home. We hope they all get adopted soon, and live happily ever after like Roofy and Bruce.

Mo” and “Lucky”(now called Aggie)

My partner and I visited the shelter in early March with the idea of adopting an older cat, and faced with so many beautiful felines, we ended up with two! We adopted “Mo” and “Lucky”(now called Aggie) after agonising over who would be best suited for our household.

Mo, who was a stray, we thought would be the dominating, confident one – and Aggie who had been surrendered, the sweet, shy and affectionate one….The tables turned when we got home….Madam Aggie jumped out of her hated carrier box and immediately demanded to be fed before checking out the entire house, and Mister Mo decided that hiding in the chimney was his best bet (followed immediately by Aggie who went up for curiosity’s sake)

We were then faced with two shaggy looking cats covered with soot and dust!

Both have really settled in well…Mo we have discovered is an outrageous flirt and has an uncanny ability to woo any female he encounters (except Aggie who he’d appears to dearly love – but she just tolerates him) – We think it’s got to be that Moustache that the ladies can’t resist! He loves to play in our very long hallway – batting his cat balls and howling with glee, followed by a nap on the lounge – on his back with his paws in the air – he is a real talker and always announces himself when entering a room

Aggie is more of a lady and enjoys smooching on the lounge and giving her people cat kisses. She is a very smart cat and likes to investigate nooks and crannies around the house and loves seeking out the late afternoon rays of sunshine on the floor in the living room. She always greets us at the front door when we come home with a big smile. She has very endearing HUGE saucer eyes.

It’s only been a few weeks and they are both spoilt rotten already – and very much loved. Things are going really well….they are SO endearing and have now met both sets of grandparents who have been indulging them as much as us.

Thanks to everyone at AAPS for giving us our new babies! Paula Gray

Sam

Last year we got a dog from you and she has been such a delight I wanted to let you know.

The lady who helped us and sold us the dog was Sue. Sam is a beagle, she’s black & tan and medium sized. Her name at the shelter was Wilma, we got her on July 3rd last year, perhaps Sue will remember her.

She’s a wonderful dog, very trainable, to the extent that we can now let her off lead on the beach at Philip Island where we have a holiday house. She loves the beach, rolls in the rock pools & makes friends with every dog that comes along, including large German Shepherds etc etc.

She gets a very lot of excersize as we walk her night and morning, and let her run in the local park as much as we can, we always thought you couldn’t let a beagle off lead, but with Goodos to entice her back for the first few times she learned very quickly that we are who she’s with. We love her!!!!

Please thank Sue very much for her help to us, and we love the Keysborough shelter and recommend her to everyone who mentions getting a dog. Cheers, Coral Burke.

Rosie, Bella & Mickey

Just a note to give you an update on our two babies.

In September 2006 our special girl Rosie who was a bullterrier X passed away at the age of 16 years and one month. We adopted her from the Keysborough Animal shelter in November 1990.

We were all devastated and it took another 3 months to think about giving a home to another dog. The day finally came and back to Keysborough we went. We went with the goal of bringing home one dog. One dog did I say.... mmm well 2 came home with us. One was a Wolfhound X heeler X Collie called Mickey. Mickey was 12 months old and the other was a Staffy X Whippet called Bella.

She was 6 months old. How time can fade memories and as they started to chew and nip memories of Rosie doing the same thing came back. Mickey had to have knee surgery. It was our choice to take him even with the bad knee (you couldn’t leave that face behind) and for the next three months he had two knee surgeries and lived inside for 3 months while Bella spent a lot of time living the outdoor life in their new kennel. We spent a lot of time with her outside but couldn’t have the two of them together because of Mickey’s knee.

The animal shelter have been so supportive to us over the past few months and even took Bella in for two weeks to care for her when Mickey needed absolute leg rest. Mickey has settled in really well and Bella is learning how to behave as she was a fisty little girl keeping us on our toes. Mickey just wants heaps of pats and cuddles and Bella is such a sweet little girl always trying to please you and really becoming settled in her new home. They are brother and sister and we really happy to have them in our family.

Peppi

Hi,
We are writing to say how happy we are with our new addition to our family.
In January we adopted Peppi, a staffy x corgi. We had been looking for a while trying to find the right dog and as soon as we saw Peppi on the internet, we knew we had found the perfect dog.
He loves his walks and loves swimming at the beach.
He is always keeping his eye on us and has even perfected his favourite trick to shake hands.
We love him dearly and couldn't imagine life without his gorgeous smile.
Thank you for bringing Peppi into our lives.
Many thanks, Shaun & Joanne.
