Success stories
Tayla

Hi to the world I’m Tayla and I’m 7 yrs old. I stayed at Aaps for a while where I was well loved and cared for but I still carried a sadness in my heart. I came to live at my forever home nine weeks ago and boy have I learned a lot. When I left Nicky and my other friends at Aaps I could not balance in a car, I was not house trained and had not learned any obedience. I was also very anti social with other dogs. I had not been speyed or immunised, I had infected eyes and infected ears and infected dew claw wounds. The kind Aaps vets helped me overcome all my health problems. Everyone at Aaps were angels to me but still couldn’t smile.

My new Mum and Dad were looking for a small dog to adopt when they read my story and saw my picture on the Aaps website. Mum said the story pulled at her heart strings and talked Dad into considering me for adoption. They had not had a big dog for 25 years. They came to visit me at the shelter and we decided we would get along.

Dad built me a huge kennel and put a hot tap in the back garden to I could have a nice warm wash, he also built a ramp so I could get into the car. I was not very fit then. I only use my kennel at night and spend most of my time shadowing my Mum and Dad in the house or garage…now that I am house trained. For the cold nights, and for walking in the rain, Mum made me a nice warm coat.

I go to obedience and am excelling……I can sit and stay and drop and I wait nicely for my home cooked dinners… I can even heel off lead if there are no other dogs about. I have learned to be a lot more social and can walk nicely alongside most dogs…so long as they don’t growl at me….otherwise I just have to try and eat them!  I am getting fitter and fitter and can now  outlast Mum and Dad with the ball throwing and fetching. I can walk for about two hours at a time now and don’t need the car ramp. I went to the beach for the first time last week and loved the sand but not the water. I had to go in though because Mum swam and I just had to look after her. I love my Mum and Dad sooo much that as soon as I can understand what they need me to do I am happy to do it. When they come home from work I am soooo happy I wag so much I quiver from my shoulders to my stubby little tail. I even put up with Chad the pesky cockatiel sitting on his cage door hissing at me.. a foot from my face!!

Thank you everyone at Aaps for looking after me until Mum and Dad could find me.

Smiling now…Tayla

Jesse

We adopted Jesse late September, so have had him for about 2 months now.  We first saw Jesse on the AAPS webpage.  We came down to the shelter a week later, and met with Jesse - after meeting him, and falling head over heels for him, we had him meet our other dog Tasha - they got along well, and we decided that we had to take him home- and with a lot of TLC, he has put on plenty of weight, and is a very handsome boy!  He is now 10 months old, and doing wonderfully!

It's hard to believe that someone gave Jesse up- he is the most affectionate, sooky character!  He absolutely THRIVES on pats and cuddles, and the daily walk is his idea of heaven.  He is still learning to walk well on the lead, but he goes to training every week, and has learnt to sit and drop- certainly an improvement.  He is best buddies with the dogs next door, and very dog and people friendly, even after spending quite a bit of time at the shelter- shows how adaptable he is, and just how lovely his character is!  He really is the baby of the family.

Jesse has fitted in well - I have attached a few photos of him and Tasha (black and tan dog).  A HUGE thankyou to all of the wonderful staff at AAPS for looking after Jesse, and allowing us to adopt him.

Toby

Hi, just wanted to update you on my wonderful boy Toby, you may remember him as 'Storm', a (then) 2 year old great Dane x.

He was surrendered (returned) to you about a year ago when the owners claimed he was too timid with strangers.

He was a bit timid, something he is growing out of, but nothing to stress us about. He is healthy, happy, loving, devoted, obedient, intelligent, playful and very cheeky!

We love him. My other dog Gemma loves him. She too was an AAPS puppy of 5 months when I got her, she is now 10.5 yrs. (pictured with Toby).

You guys do the best work. I have always got my puppies from you (3 now) and always will.

Bless your cotton socks and furry paws!

Bundy

We adopted little "Bundy" from the shelter after our other little dog "Ralf" (who we bought from the shelter 16 years ago) had to be put down.

Bundy was not allowed to go home with us until he was introduced to our other dog "Simmo" because apparently the last place he went to was not suitable due to their dog being a bit bossy. Anyway Bundy fell in love with Simmo so we took him home with us.

At first he was very, very timid & unsure of how he was to behave ( he has perfect manners!) He has settled in really well now & seems to be very happy. He loves to go for a walk, likes a bath, likes the car & loves people.H e tries to play with Simmo, but she is 12 years old & only wants to rest! I still miss Ralf very much but Bundy is great company & very affectionate so I am pleased we have him.

I keep telling anyone I know who is looking for a dog to visit the shelter because twice now we have been lucky to obtain beautiful dogs. Ralf was the first dog we viewed 16 years ago & Bundy was the first dog we viewed 6 weeks ago. It must have been love at first sight!

Striker

Hiya,
We adopted a dog (we named Striker) from you guys in September last year

Striker has settled in nicely, apart from chasing the cat, he gets on well with our other dog, Homer.

He had a cancerous growth on his leg earlier this year that has been cut out

He is a great dog, easy to walk, obedient, cheeky sometimes but loves to cuddle and warm up close to the fire.

I've set up a web camera looking at the couch in front of our house where our dogs love to sleep and relax

Homer has a studded collar and is shorter and stockier then the thinner and taller Striker.
