Success stories
Lucky

Hi Everyone at AAPS!

My name is Lucky (Tag 24499) and I was adopted from the AAPS shelter in August 2006. My new owners decided to keep my name because they feel very lucky themselves having snagged such a fun yet gentle natured dog like me!

It was love at first sight with me and my Dad. Mum found me online and suggested to Dad that they come and meet me. When I was brought in to the meeting area, Dad was sitting down on the bench seat and Mum was standing next to him. I had a sniff around and then saw there was room left on the seat for me so I jumped right up and plonked myself on Dad’s lap and looked up at him. Dad decided in that moment that we were right for each other.

Although it’s only been about a month in my new home, I have settled right in. As you can see from the photos, I love sunning myself on the back deck, lounging around on the furniture and having a bit of a wrestle on the floor with my Dad. I have two feline brothers who are still a bit unsure about me, but we’ve come to an “understanding”… I don’t bother them, and they just ignore me!

When I was adopted, I was a little bit portly. I could put it down to “middle aged spread” as I am 6 years old after all, but I think my previous owner may have loved me very much and slipped me the occasional sweet treat on the sly! My new owners take me on daily walks and I have lost a lot of weight already. I am looking more like a dog now, rather than a barrel with legs!

Much to the delight of my new owners, I am completely trained. I know all of my commands, and I am fully house trained which means that I can stay inside on rainy days.

I would really like to thank Lynette at the shelter for hooking me up with my new Mum and Dad. We were a bit hesitant at first because before I was surrendered, I had an elderly owner who was home all the time and I was used to a lot of company. My new owners go to work every day and Lynette wasn’t sure if I’d fit in. But she sussed out my Mum and Dad and decided that they were good enough people for me. It doesn’t bother me that they go to work every day and they can tell because I’ve never done anything naughty that would indicate otherwise. They love me and give me lots and lots of attention when they are home, and I get to go for a walk every day where I meet other dogs and leave my mark all around the neighbourhood.

My Mum and Dad insist that I tell you that if you have a little bit of room in your home and your life for a dog, consider adopting one. There are lots of dogs out there who need loving homes and haven’t been as “lucky” as me. Us older dogs are definitely worth a look too, considering that some of us, like me, are fully trained and just ready for someone who has a lot of love to give.

Thank you AAPS for helping me get a new home where I am loved and well cared for.

Lots of love from Lucky

Jackson

We would like to give you an update on the lovely staffy we adopted from aaps on 7th July this year. His kennel number was 24317 we have since named him Jackson. The trip home to Bayswater was a long one in the middle of peak hour but lucky he had met his new sister before the adoption and they had worn each other out.
As the photos show he has settled in really well and our other staffy (Piper who is a 3 yr old staffy) has welcomed him into her kennel (big thing for her to do seeing as she didnt use it till he came along!). He has been a bit mischievious. Within a week he had helped himself to everything on an outside window ledge and also ate some lovely citronella candles (lucky i work at a vet and took quick action!). He likes teasing the little pomeranian on the other side of the fence (removed part of a wood paling so he can see it!).
He gets to see a lot of scenery around Bayswater as he gets a 3km or more walk/run a day. He has enjoyed watching the horses in the paddocks and Piper has shown him the ropes when it comes to diving into any puddle possible so mum or dad gets wet! They have both caught on very quickly when it is walk and feed time and race each other to the appropriate door once these two activities are over its inside for a bit of R & R (as the photos show it didnt take him long to learn to jump on the couch or bed- he was unsure at first but followed his big sister and now is a pro!). He is a typical staffy and likes destroying all his toys but is good

enough to still play with them and fetch them (and yes he returns them!) once they are destroyed.
A big thank you to all of you for looking after him once he was brought in as a stray and a big thank you to sue for helping us through the adoption and organising everything for us. We are very lucky to have found such a lovely young dog and such nice people to look after him and let us adopt him!
Thanks again - Aaron and Lisette

Sooty

Mum and i had ben looking for a dog for ages. There was never anything right for us- it had to be a dog that would put up with virtually anything. Mum, my sister and i would come every saturday after horseriding. We kept coming for so many months. But one- day, when we started to lose hope about finding the right dog, we found Sooty. We were going in to the office and this man led this dog in. He was wagging his little tail and my mum and sister sat down and gave him all these pats- and by what the man said he seemed perfect for our family. We came back a little while later and we told a helper about him. Tee lady said to our mum not to geyt our hopes up- the dog had been wondering and a sweet dog like that is bound to be found. Days went, and he was up for adoption. We got him , and we knew we had to be quick because i lot of families want him. Sooty, as we soon named him, settled in really well. He is a great dog and loves to be with us. He has also made a new best friend- Flopsy, who happens to be a rabbit. They sleep next to each other, and they eat next to each other. We are so lucky to have him. From Maddison Rae (12 years old).

Ava and Stella

This is just to say hello and to let you know of my extreme gratitude for introducing me to my wonderful, wonderful cats, Ava and Stella. Life has certainly been a roller coaster since they arrived in La Casa Bradbury.

Ava (Black Scottish Fold, also known as 'Goinky' or 'Chopper') and Stella (Torti Tab, also known at 'Fatty Boomba Hot Chips') were adopted on Sunday, 26th March, a day that will be fondly remembered as the day I became a mum and a slave. Ava had the flu when she came to live with me, Stella joined her with the sniffles shortly thereafter however after their antibiotics, hot totties and luxury food/comfort/cuddles they both got over their flu and started to take over their new environment with gusto.

Ava (Goinky), the quieter of the two, is a little odd and spends most of her days chasing her tail, fighting the invisible monsters on my bed and staring into space or watching telly. She loves to climb into bed with me and watch DVD's on my laptop. I've tried to introduce her to Dr Harry but she's just not interested, I don't think she likes his hats. Stella (Fatty Boomba Hot Chips) lives up to her nickname, she is a feline garbage disposal unit. Clearly she needs to energy as there is a lot of babysitting to do; covers up Ava's 'business' once she's done in the kitty litter, makes sure Ava is squeeky clean, is in charge of all games and activities plus loves to stalk and torture her toys.

It is bliss. I love them like crazy and think I might be turning into the dreaded Neighbourhood Nutty Cat Lady. They sleep around my neck, like fuzzy, purring woolly scarves, give me at least one good chortle each day and generally give me all the peace and affection that one woman could want from her pets. I am going through some family sadness at the moment, and these two bundles of fur have helped me so much - they are a comfort and joy and I cannot really begin to express how much they mean to me.

Thankyou for giving me the opportunity to adopt these two beautiful girls and for the great work that you do at the shelter and many more times thanks - each day with them is an absolute gift.
Yours Elisabeth Bradbury

Cassie

Hi there to everyone at the shelter. It has been nearly 12 months since adopting our German Shepherd in late Oct.'05 and we would love to give you an update on her progress. She was Tag No. 23264, left in the overnight kennels, no name and no history. Her age at the time was approx 13months according to the Vet. We named her Cassie and the trip home for her was very frightening. She was very frightened to get in the car now we can't keep her out she loves it. We have had to devote a lot of time with her to gain her confidence however, bit by bit as she came to trust us her beautiful personality began to shine through and after 8 months we heard her bark for the first time (what joy), now she loves and trusts us dearly as we do her. She is still frightened of people particularly big men and noises (who knows what happened). Cassie has taken over our bedroom as her den and safety blanket, as from under the bed she can observe what's going on. At first when visitors called she would hide under the bed, now, when the same visitors keep calling she has gained confidence and will stand beside me and not hide. My mother lives with us permanently now and Cassie has no problem with her at all now. There is still more work to be done for Cassie to be more confident and not so frightened. When we get up in the morning we think we are in a butcher shop (bones etc.) Cassie roams around at night crunching, playing and jumping on our bed, no wonder she is a bit lazy through the day. Cassie loves to be taken over to some old market gardens near us at the back of a golf course and it was there we discovered she can be let off the lead to run, investigate and hide when others appear. Developers own the land and things are progressing very quickly. Here are some photos with Cassie hiding in the scrub, looking in the golf course and before and after the clearing of the market gardens. WE are so happy with her and to us this is a success story. We will keep you up to date on her progress..
Keep up the good work
Regards,
Merianne and Richard.
