Success stories
Lady

We came to get a friend for our rabbit… We ended up with a Rottweiler.

We first saw Lady on April 25th, she was sitting quietly in her pen looking knowingly at us.  We had both been without a dog for a year and were in a position to finally give a dog a good home. We hadn’t intended to get a dog that day, just to have at look at the shelter and see if it could possibly be somewhere we could find the dog for us.

She found us.

When we asked to meet her, we were told she wasn’t available. She was very underweight, arthritic, most of her teeth were broken and she was 10 years old and looked every bit of it. We got to meet her anyway, she was so calm despite all the noise around. We fell for her and decided quietly that even if we gave her a warm place to sleep for a short while, then so be it. It took a few days for it to be decided that she was well enough to be sent home with us and we were unsure if we’d get to have her at all.

Now 3 months later she is barely recognizable as the same dog we bought home. Her legs don’t shake, people comment on her glossy coat and she bounds around our back yard chasing a ball like a puppy. Neither of us has ever had such a well-behaved (she even poops on command), calm dog.

She’s spoiling us. Thanks for the dog. Sunny and Lissa

Czar

Royal Greetings to all at AAPS, Keysborough

We apologise  for  taking so long to write to you. You knew us as Lee, but our family renamed us Czar, in honour of our Kingly bearing  (Human’s can be  obtuse---a Russian name for a Tibetan spaniel? Oh well at least one was spared one’s sister’s habit of naming family additions after Star Trek Characters!)   Next year will be the 10th anniversary of our coming to live with them and in their defense, they have been busy catering to our every need (Royalty don’t have whims!).

It’s been a hectic decade.  We’ve lived in Cheltenham Victoria, Hinchinbrook in Sydney, back to Cheltenham and now we’ve moved to sunny Queensland where we have retired to a life of further luxury in Mackay with one’s Mummy and Daddy. One does miss one’s human sister, as only she could convince one to temporarily abdicate and play chasey all around the house! And five years ago one’s older sister Chloe, a gentle golden Labrador went to doggie heaven and one misses her, but now one gets spoilt more than ever!

Ten years of candle lit meat pies on one’s birthday, long walks, constant cuddles (humans can be sooooooooooooo needy!) chicken necks, various cooked delicacies and having the total admiration of one’s subjects! None of which would have been possible without the love and support one received when one was a “King in Exile” at your Embassy. Yours gratefully - His  Royal Majesty “Czar” the First of the  Maity Family

P.S. One’s scribe wishes to add a note and One has graciously agreed.

P.P.S This photo was taken at last year’s Christmas with the Animals, at the Shelter.  It’s of Czar and I, and I would like to apologise for his use of the Royal “We”, but as he has us wrapped around his dew claw there really was nothing else for it!

Raffles and Gypsy

Hi All,

Just a quick note to let you know that Raffles and Gypsy our beagles that we got in January are settling in really well, we were advised at the time of not letting them off their leads, 6 months on and as you can see from the pictures they love walking and running about on the fields near us, they are muched loved by all the family and everyone who see's them, our garden is completely at their mercy,we have now kerb the digging, my husband dug a hole and position a child's shell shaped paddling pool in it now they dig to their hearts content. they settled in well with the other members of the family our 22year old cockteil and a little canary that flew into the garden before they arrive, must have heard this the palace to be. thank you for our two lovely beagles.

The Steward family.

Diago

Dear staff,

These are photos of Diago; formerly know to you as Smudge. I wasn’t sure if he would warm up to us as I was told that he was not a very affectionate cat and looking at his siblings who were also in the pen with him we didn’t like our chances as they all ran away when approached. But there was something about Diago that I couldn’t pass.

When we brought him home I worried because I thought he had bitten his tongue as it was hanging out to the side. (We realise now, because of his crooked tooth his tongue sometimes gets left behind (see pictures)).

On the first night he refused to acknowledge us and sat crying behind a picture. The next night however after we coaxed him with some biscuits he started becoming more confident. Within the week he was strutting around the house as if he owned it and we couldn’t sit down for more than five minutes without him wanting a hug or a scratch behind the ears.

It’s been three weeks since I adopted him and as the photos show he has settled in brilliantly. He is probably the most spoilt cat I know and probably the most affectionate too. I couldn’t have asked for a better pet…even though he has already destroyed a few things. Items are replaceable but I can assure Diago sure isn’t.

Thank you for your help - Maree & Diago

Bonnie

Hi to all at Keysborough Animal Shelter.

My name is Bonnie but you knew me as tag number 23940. I was a 3 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback cross when my Mum and Dad came to the shelter and rescued me. I was so happy to have people to call my own. I put on my best behaviour for them so they would know how good I can be. They discovered that I was scared of the dark on the first night when I had to go outside, they had to turn the lights on and come outside with me coz it was all a bit scary. I’m ok now though and don’t mind the dark at all. It’s really fun chasing the moths that fly around the lights but they don’t play with me for very long. I’ve discovered they’re a bit fragile. I have lots of fun playing with all my toys and Mum and Dad keep teaching me new games so I can have even more fun. Mum and Dad take me to Grandma and Grandpa’s (Mum’s parents) often coz they have this really big backyard and there’s lots to explore and I have so much fun with them and they give me lots of treats. Mum takes me to Obedience School and I’m learning heaps, now I just have to remember that when Mum and Dad use one of those new words, I’m supposed to do what they say. I know what they mean, I just forget I’m supposed to listen sometimes. I love going on walks but coz I’m only 6 months old I can’t walk too far yet without getting tired. When I get home I just can’t wait to get in my beanbag for a sleep. Thank you so much for looking after me at the shelter and helping my new Mum and Dad find me. I love my Mum and Dad heaps and I know they love me too (otherwise they wouldn’t keep leaving slippers and shoes and hats and tissues and toys and treats and plants and feather dusters around for me to chew – they’re so thoughtful). Mum has included some pictures of me so you can see how much I’ve grown. Luv Bonnie.

Jack
Thought you may be interested to know my Mother (now deceased) & I adopted Jack (cat) on the 13/3/1994 he was 1 year old and I beleive he came from Coburg, his was # 7012 in cage #15 his D.O.B 24/1/1993.

He is a very spoilt boy and now lives on the GoldCoast and is now 13, he has a very lay back disposition and has given so much love and pleasure the past 12 years, also visiting my Mum in the nursing home where she spent her last 6 weeks (passing June '99)

He has regular check up at the Vet's along with his now adopted brother & sister (both black) but he is still "the man"

As I was told when I first came to the adoption cnt the cat will pick you and he sure did but I feel he picked well as I (we) did.
thanks "Happy Jan"
